Selfmade with Brit Morin

I want to give you a backstory on how i met brit morin because it is about, #1 putting yourself out there (even when it is scary) — and #2 taking chances (especially when it is scary).

it all started when I direct messaged Brit on November 7th and honestly thanked her for using her platform when she posted that history was made when Kamala Harris was elected. i know that not everyone with a huge following chose to be public about who they voted for, but brit did and i was here for it. in a nutshell, she put her opinion out there and that was not easy, and probably scary.

after thanking brit, i shared with her (while dying inside how much I was geeking out that we were dm’ing) that I had diy’d my way into making “I’m speaking” shirts and asked if i could send her one— no strings attached, no promotion needed, just from one craft-a-holic to another . and she did want one! and i was incredibly excited about that because the thing is, brit has been that bigger “teacher” for me (and millions of women) who are self taught and creative since 2013. honestly, it was a creative outlet taking a stab at e-commerce during quarantine. I was feeling pandemic fatigue. The kids weren’t in school hence endless chores and meals and homeschooling plus we had an even fuller house with dear My mother in law living with us while my husband was working 6 days a week. I actually didn’t think the shirt would grow into another revenue stream and by the holidays, i was selling hand written ornaments and raising money for the la food bank. the creative bug bit.

i geeked out and even videotaped myself showing her my first version of the shirt—- an iron on decal that I had gotten at michaels. I shared that I designed the shirt on my phone and opened up an etsy shop spontaneously. if you are new to me, i’ve worked really hard to stop procrastinating on my ideas and instead move forward just knowing things will evolve along the way. again and again, you see that in how brit + co evolved over the years.

I was so happy when she wore it on inauguration day and tagged me to help promote my shop when She didn’t have to.

what happened in the next few months was a blessing after sending out that first direct message. So this is the moral of this post—-

mama, i want to give you the motivation to connect with those who inspire you—- no matter how scary it feels. i know how scary it is to put your story out there too. and i truly believe, the right person, the right customer, the right client will see the true you if you show them.

and with that first direct message, we began a connection that lead to some exciting news!
